Planning Meals for the Week/Month or Whatever

Has anyone found an easy, healthy way to plan meals for a week? I don't tend to stick to the "meal plan" when I do plan. And sometimes I just don't feel like eating the "plan."

But if there isn't a plan that means that by the time I am STARVING I just want something NOW. So, I go out. BAD. BAD. BAD. (trust me, my hips said so)

Any Ideas?

I made an excel spreadsheet of everything I CAN make for all meals, side dishes and desserts. It's on the fridge.

Sometimes it helps if I'm too lazy to think, but it doesn't really work all the time. If I don't have dinner planned by lunch ... doom. I hope you get some good ideas. I could use this info.

We keep our pantry and freezer stocked with the ingredients to make our most common dishes. Whenever I use something (tomatoes, soup, noodles, rice) I put that item on the list (and I keep enough to make most dishes 6 times or so). When I go grocery shopping I am rarely shopping for ingredients to make specific meals, I am shopping for staples and fresh produce and dairy. This way I have a multitude of choices for any given meal. Meal planning takes too long, it's boring, and I frequently don't want to make what I've planned by the time the planned day rolls around. I know it works well for others, but the well stocked pantry works best for our family.
