I LOVE you! This is one of my biggest pet peeves and it's driven me crazy since we moved to Utah. Where I grew up, you got sent to the principal's office if you called someone or something "retarded." I still flinch every time I hear it. But it's so common in the west -- and no one seems to think it's a big deal and it drives me CRAZY. THANK YOU for posting this.
Anytime. I saw it on the News this morning. There are a bunch of fundraisers at multiple locations today in the valley supporting the cause. Today is apparently THE day for this.
It is a cruelty that we need to rid our speech of.
I have several friends who drop this word all the time on their blogs or in their tweets. I try to take the time to explain why it's so offensive, but I think they think I am being ridiculous and nitpicky. Another word I hate and am trying hard to remove from my vocabulary: lame.
I understand the frustration. We just have to keep doing our best to inform others of the severity and impact of their words. And keep using our words for positive efforts.
